Tandem Friends Connections

Brooklyn Film Festival 2006

Posted by: garybanks on: October 12, 2007

[Some appropriate report on Tandem's experience]]

The Bridge Film Festival on April 22 was an impressive event. It was amazing to see so many outstanding films by kids showing Quaker values in action.” Franne Rosenthal, a member of the 15th Street Quaker Meeting, artist, and teacher, was summing up her experience as a judge at this year’s festival. “Brooklyn Friends in general—and [festival director] Andy Cohen in particular—were phenomenal hosts. The festival was a positive experience for the students and their families, and it wouldn’t surprise me if many go on to film related careers.

Middle School Parent Program

Posted by: garybanks on: October 11, 2007

*When:* Five consecutive Tuesdays, September 25 – October 23rd, 7:00 – 8:30 pm

*Where: *The Blue Room

Middle School health teachers Mary Sullivan and Carolyn Merrick are facilitating meetings for parents where we learn about and discuss adolescent growth and development in our present culture. Parents are welcome to attend any or all class meetings. Classes will begin with a didactic presentation and/or films on various topics followed by group discussions.

*This week ( October 9th) we will discuss adolescent sexuality. *Sexuality encompasses gender role and identity; physical changes and body image; relationships with family members, friends, and the larger community; and sexual activity. All of these issues loom large in adolescence, challenging students and parents. Knowing what is developmentally appropriate is helpful.

We will also focus on some of the more challenging aspects of parent-child interactions during adolescence. How does a parent successfully handle the normal “pulling away” of adolescents from their parents? How do we navigate through all of the developmental milestones that are normal but will create conflict and tension between parent and child? We hope to see you there.

Blue Ridge Day—Friday, October 19th

Posted by: garybanks on: October 11, 2007

It is a long-standing tradition at Tandem to take a day away from campus and enjoy the splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Parents are invited to join us; however, pets and friends, because of logistics, are not.
As the date is October 19th , anticipate dressing in layers that can easily be removed. Hats and zippered windbreakers are ideal. Also, please bring comfortable and sturdy shoes.

The middle school will be hiking 4.8 miles along the White Rock Falls Circuit Trail, located at milepost 19.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The upper school will be hiking the Jone’s Run/Doyle’s River Circuit Hike. All of this exercise warrants lots of liquids and a great lunch with yummy snacks. Water must come on the trip! We stress that no glass containers, knives, or i-pods be brought along. Students are welcome to bring along portable instruments, art supplies, and card games… Please double check that your child has packed their day bag accordingly.
We are trying to provide a full day of hiking at a comfortable pace, so our departure time is very important. We will need to take roll by advisory before leaving campus. Plan on having your child at Tandem by 8:15am to help us in this process.

There is an opportunity for parents to drive. We would like to encourage this to be a thoughtful process that involves car pooling. Most importantly if you are going directly to the hiking sites or know your child cannot attend for some reason, Middle School parents should contact Paola Christy (pchristy@tandemfs.org) or Brett Brunner (bbrunner@tandemfs.org), and Upper School parents should contact Steve Ganong (sganong@tandemfs.org) *no later than October 10th*. This will aid us significantly with our organization concerning attendance and bus rentals, so thanks in advance for doing your part to make this a wonderful day.
Please note: In case of inclement weather we ask that you call the school and dial ext. 500 for an update on any changes.
